We Care More About Character Than Vocabulary

Marine Corps Sergeant | Founder, Two Marines Moving

Every once in a while, someone asks a question that makes me laugh.

This is one of them.

Is cussing allowed at Two Marines Moving?

The short answer is:

Yes.

Of course it is.

Let's be realistic.

I'm the owner of the company.

I'm a Marine infantry veteran.

Sometimes I cuss.

So what?

Let's Start With Reality

I've never believed that character can be measured by counting curse words.

I've met people who never cussed and couldn't be trusted.

I've also met people who occasionally used colorful language and would give you the shirt off their back.

Vocabulary and character are not the same thing.

At Two Marines Moving, we care a whole lot more about:

  • Integrity
  • Accountability
  • Reliability
  • Professionalism
  • Teamwork
  • Respect
  • Work ethic

Those things matter.

We Hire a Wide Variety of Good People

Although Two Marines Moving was founded by a Marine infantry veteran, we are not a Marine-only company.

Far from it.

Over the years, we've hired and worked alongside:

  • Marines
  • Soldiers
  • Green Berets
  • Rangers
  • Sailors
  • Airmen
  • Police officers
  • Firefighters
  • First responders
  • Students
  • Civilians from all walks of life

These people do not all come from the same background.

They do not all speak the same way.

They do not all have the same personality.

And they certainly don't all have the same playlist.

What they tend to share is something far more important:

  • Accountability
  • Dependability
  • Professionalism
  • Team orientation
  • Personal responsibility

Those qualities matter a lot more to us than whether someone occasionally says a four-letter word.

Context Matters

Now let's talk about professionalism.

There is a difference between:

Cussing.

And:

Being unprofessional.

Those are not the same thing.

If an employee is rude to a client, we have a problem.

If an employee is disrespectful to a teammate, we have a problem.

If an employee creates a hostile environment, we have a problem.

But if two grown adults are moving a refrigerator that weighs as much as a small car and someone says:

"That's a heavy fucking fridge."

And the response is:

"Yes Sir, it is a heavy fucking fridge."

I'm not exactly calling an emergency meeting.

Sometimes people are simply acknowledging reality.

The refrigerator didn't get lighter because everybody used cleaner vocabulary.

We Expect Judgment

What matters to me is judgment.

Adults should understand the difference between:

  • A private conversation
  • A team conversation
  • A client interaction
  • A professional environment

Good judgment matters.

Professionalism matters.

Context matters.

One of the reasons we hire mature people is because mature people understand that not every environment is the same.

The One Bright Line

There is one exception.

One.

I do not take the Lord's name in vain.

You won't hear me do it.

I simply don't.

That isn't about corporate policy.

That isn't about public relations.

That isn't about marketing.

It's about faith and respect.

And while someone is on the clock, representing Two Marines Moving, working on a client's contract, driving one of our trucks, or drawing a paycheck from this company, I expect the same courtesy.

People can disagree with me.

That's fine.

But this is one standard I don't bend on.

You can communicate frustration without using the Lord's name disrespectfully.

You can communicate urgency without using the Lord's name disrespectfully.

You can communicate intensity without using the Lord's name disrespectfully.

It's not a difficult standard.

We Are Not a Monastery

I think some people imagine there are only two choices.

Option One:

Everybody says whatever they want.

Option Two:

Nobody may ever utter a four-letter word.

Reality usually lives somewhere in the middle.

We aren't trying to create chaos.

We aren't trying to become the language police either.

We're trying to build a company full of accountable adults.

Adults who know how to work hard.

Adults who know how to treat people well.

Adults who know how to use good judgment.

Final Thoughts

At Two Marines Moving, we care a lot more about character than vocabulary.

A person who occasionally cusses but is reliable, accountable, respectful, professional, and hardworking is going to fit our culture far better than someone with a perfect vocabulary and poor character.

The goal isn't perfection.

The goal is professionalism.

The goal is respect.

The goal is treating people right.

And one of the ways we show that respect at Two Marines Moving is simple:

Don't take the Lord's name in vain.

Everything else starts with good judgment.
