Some Men Just Keep Serving

Marine Corps Sergeant | Founder, Two Marines Moving

Over the years, I've had the opportunity to work with a lot of impressive people at Two Marines Moving.

Veterans.

Police officers.

Deputies.

Firefighters.

EMTs.

Federal agents.

Students.

Tradesmen.

Hardworking civilians from every walk of life.

Every now and then, however, someone comes along whose life story makes you stop and think:

"That's a lot of service."

One of those men was Nixon.

Twenty Years In the Marine Corps

Nixon served twenty years in the United States Marine Corps.

Not one enlistment.

Not one deployment.

A full career.

Twenty years.

That's a long time to serve anything bigger than yourself.

Twenty years of showing up.

Twenty years of standards.

Twenty years of responsibility.

Twenty years of leadership.

By itself, that would have earned my respect.

But Nixon wasn't finished.

Twenty Years In Law Enforcement

After retiring from the Marine Corps, he went on to serve another twenty years as a police officer.

Think about that for a minute.

Most people retire from one career.

Nixon retired from two.

Forty years of public service.

Forty years of responsibility.

Forty years of answering the call when other people needed somebody to show up.

That says something about a person's character.

Then He Worked At Two Marines Moving

After all of that, Nixon spent time working part-time at Two Marines Moving.

I always found that remarkable.

Most people with his resume would have been sitting on a porch somewhere.

Not Nixon.

He still wanted to work.

He still wanted to contribute.

He still wanted to be productive.

He still wanted to be part of a team.

That's something I respected.

And still respect.

The Man Was In Incredible Shape

The other thing that stood out about Nixon was his physical fitness.

The man was built.

Huge biceps.

Strong.

Fit.

The kind of shape you don't accidentally maintain.

You don't get there by wishing.

You don't get there by making excuses.

You get there through decades of discipline.

That fit perfectly with what I already knew about him.

Twenty years in the Marine Corps.

Twenty years in law enforcement.

A lifetime of standards.

A lifetime of accountability.

The physical fitness was simply another reflection of that mindset.

A Family That Understands Service

At the time, Nixon had a young son.

He had also married a Marine Gunnery Sergeant.

I always got a kick out of that.

Talk about a household that understands service.

Talk about a household that understands commitment.

Different people.

Different careers.

Similar values.

The Kind of Man You Remember

Some people leave an impression because they're loud.

Others leave an impression because of how they carry themselves.

Nixon was the second kind.

Professional.

Reliable.

Disciplined.

The type of person who didn't have to constantly tell everyone who he was.

His actions did that for him.

Those are the people I enjoy working alongside.

More Common Than People Think

What many clients don't realize is that Nixon wasn't a complete anomaly at Two Marines Moving.

Over the years, we've employed:

  • Marines
  • Soldiers
  • Sailors
  • Airmen
  • Deputies
  • Police officers
  • Firefighters
  • EMTs
  • Federal agents
  • Future police officers
  • Future firefighters

Some worked with us before entering those professions.

Some worked with us while serving.

Some worked with us after retiring.

It's one of the reasons I often say that we don't merely support first responders and law enforcement.

In many cases, we have actually employed them.

And that's been an honor and a privilege.

It Might Be In the Blood

Public service has roots in my own family as well.

One of my great-grandfathers served as a sheriff in Iowa during the 1800s.

I've always found that interesting.

Maybe it's in the blood.

Or maybe every generation simply finds its own version of service.

For me, that included the Marine Corps and entrepreneurship.

For Nixon, it included the Marine Corps, law enforcement, and somehow still finding time to move furniture.

Final Thoughts

When people ask what kind of people work at Two Marines Moving, there isn't just one answer.

We've employed people from all kinds of backgrounds.

But every once in a while, you meet someone who reminds you what a lifetime of service looks like.

Nixon was one of those men.

Twenty years in the Marine Corps.

Twenty years in law enforcement.

A commitment to physical fitness.

A commitment to family.

A commitment to service.

Then part-time at Two Marines Moving.

That's a life well lived.

And it earned my respect.
