Professional Appearance Matters

Marine Corps Sergeant | Founder, Two Marines Moving

At Two Marines Moving, professional appearance matters.

That doesn't mean everybody has to look the same.

It doesn't mean everybody has to have the same haircut.

It doesn't mean everybody has to dress like they walked out of a military recruiting poster.

What it does mean is simple:

Look professional.

Clients are inviting us into their homes.

Clients are trusting us with their belongings.

Clients are trusting us with their property.

Clients are trusting us around their families.

Professional appearance matters.

This Is Not A Tattoo-Free Company

Let's clear something up immediately.

A lot of our employees have tattoos.

That should surprise exactly nobody.

We have Marines.

We have veterans.

We have former police officers.

We have firefighters.

We have EMTs.

We have blue-collar professionals.

And yes, many of them have tattoos.

We're perfectly fine with tattoos.

We're perfectly fine with sleeve tattoos.

We have had plenty of outstanding employees with sleeve tattoos.

No problem.

The issue isn't tattoos.

The issue is professionalism.

The issue is judgment.

The issue is presentation.

We Are Good With Sleeves

Let's be even more direct.

We are good with sleeves here at Two Marines Moving.

Sleeve tattoos do not automatically concern me.

I've known too many outstanding Marines, Soldiers, veterans, police officers, firefighters, and movers with sleeve tattoos to worry about that.

Character matters more.

Work ethic matters more.

Professionalism matters more.

Judgment matters more.

Why We Don't Use Marine Corps Tattoo Standards

People sometimes assume that because Two Marines Moving was founded by a Marine, we automatically use Marine Corps tattoo standards.

We don't.

The Marine Corps has historically maintained stricter tattoo standards than the Army.

That's appropriate for the Marine Corps.

The Marine Corps gets to establish Marine Corps standards.

Two Marines Moving gets to establish Two Marines Moving standards.

Quite frankly, if I applied Marine Corps tattoo standards to every applicant, I would eliminate some otherwise outstanding people.

Some excellent Soldiers.

Some excellent veterans.

Some excellent future Team Leaders.

Some excellent employees.

That would not make much sense.

Instead, we use a more practical standard that allows professionalism while recognizing reality.

A lot of hardworking, responsible, professional people have tattoos.

No Face Tattoos

Let's get the obvious one out of the way.

No face tattoos.

Period.

Face tattoos are outside our standards.

Professional appearance matters.

Client confidence matters.

Our reputation matters.

This isn't a complicated subject.

No Gauged Ears

No gauged ears.

Professional appearance matters.

Clients notice.

Clients form impressions.

That's reality.

No Septum Piercings

No septum piercings.

That is one of our appearance standards.

Simple.

No Extreme Facial Jewelry

More broadly, we are not looking for extreme facial jewelry that immediately becomes the center of attention.

The client should be focused on the service.

Not the jewelry.

No Eccentric Or Unnatural Hair Colors

This is another easy one.

No bright green hair.

No bright blue hair.

No bright orange hair.

No blood-red dyed hair.

No neon-colored hair.

No eccentric or unnatural hair colors.

People are free to make those choices.

And Two Marines Moving is free to establish professional appearance standards.

We Are Movers, Not Performance Artists

One way I think about it is simple.

The client should be focused on the service.

Not your hair color.

Not your septum piercing.

Not your gauged ears.

Not your face tattoo.

Not your latest attempt to become a human attention magnet.

We are movers.

We are not performance artists.

Let's Talk About Judgment

Some people seem uncomfortable with the word "judgment."

I'm not.

Judgment is part of leadership.

Judgment is part of hiring.

Judgment is part of business.

Judgment is part of life.

Judgment is part of the Marine Corps.

Every day people make judgments.

Clients make judgments.

Managers make judgments.

Owners make judgments.

Employees make judgments.

The question isn't whether judgment exists.

The question is whether the judgment is sound.

Good judgment is one of the most valuable traits a person can possess.

Appearance Communicates

Every appearance choice communicates something.

Every tattoo placement communicates something.

Every piercing communicates something.

Every grooming decision communicates something.

That's reality.

A sleeve tattoo communicates one thing.

A face tattoo communicates another.

Natural hair communicates one thing.

Neon green hair communicates another.

People are free to make their choices.

Organizations are free to evaluate those choices.

That's how life works.

Clients Are Judging Too

Let's be honest.

The client is judging.

The moment we pull into the driveway, the client starts forming impressions.

That's normal.

Everybody does it.

Clients are asking themselves:

  • Do these people look professional?
  • Do these people look trustworthy?
  • Do these people look competent?
  • Do these people look like they know what they're doing?

Those impressions matter.

Professional Organizations Have Standards

Professional organizations are allowed to have professional standards.

Those standards do not require apology or justification.

Clients hire professionals.

Professional appearance is part of professionalism.

That's the standard.

Final Thoughts

At Two Marines Moving, we are not hiring tattoos.

We are not hiring hairstyles.

We are not hiring piercings.

We are hiring people.

We are hiring Moving Specialists.

We are hiring Team Leaders.

We are hiring professionals.

And part of professionalism is judgment.

Our standards are straightforward:

  • Tattoos are generally permitted.
  • Sleeve tattoos are permitted.
  • Military and veteran tattoos are permitted.
  • Professional appearance is required.
  • Face tattoos are not permitted.
  • Gauged ears are not permitted.
  • Septum piercings are not permitted.
  • Extreme facial jewelry is not permitted.
  • Eccentric or unnatural hair colors are not permitted.

Simple.

Professional.

Common sense.

And that's usually a pretty good place to start.
