I Am Not Your Therapist

Marine Corps Sergeant | Founder, Two Marines Moving

Let me save everyone some time.

I am not a therapist.

I am not a psychiatrist.

I am not a psychoanalyst.

I am not a counselor.

And as of the writing of this article, Two Marines Moving does not employ any therapists, psychiatrists, psychoanalysts, or counselors.

That's not what we do.

We move furniture.

We make reservations.

We serve clients.

We solve moving problems.

We work together as a team to accomplish the mission.

We Are A Moving Company

This may sound obvious, but sometimes obvious things need to be said.

Two Marines Moving is a moving company.

Our mission is not group therapy.

Our mission is not relationship counseling.

Our mission is not conflict mediation between boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands, wives, exes, roommates, cousins, or anybody else.

Our mission is moving clients.

Everything else is secondary.

Everyone Here Arrived With A Job To Do

One thing I have never understood is why some people assume that everybody within earshot automatically becomes responsible for listening to every problem in their life.

Just because someone is standing next to you does not mean they volunteered to become your emotional support system.

The mover came to work.

The dispatcher came to work.

The moving consultant came to work.

The team leader came to work.

The operations supervisor came to work.

The owner came to work.

Everyone here arrived with a job to do.

Everyone.

Therapists Get Paid To Listen

Let's clear something up.

Therapists get paid to listen to people's problems.

Psychiatrists get paid to listen to people's problems.

Counselors get paid to listen to people's problems.

That's literally their profession.

You pay them.

You are the patient.

They are the professional.

The money flows from the patient to the therapist.

At Two Marines Moving, the relationship works the opposite way.

We pay employees.

Employees do not pay us.

Employees are on the clock to work.

Whether that's:

  • Eight hours
  • Four hours
  • One hour
  • Or one minute

Nobody is on the clock to be somebody else's therapist.

Not the owner.

Not the dispatcher.

Not the moving consultant.

Not the person standing next to you on a moving truck.

Everyone here arrived with a job to do.

Work Is Not Group Therapy

Sometimes people make a strange assumption.

They assume that because another person is physically nearby, that person must be available as an outlet for every frustration, argument, grievance, disappointment, or personal drama going on in their life.

That's not how work works.

Being in proximity to another person does not automatically make them your therapist.

It does not automatically make them your counselor.

It does not automatically make them responsible for carrying your emotional load.

People came to work.

They came to move furniture.

They came to answer phones.

They came to make reservations.

They came to serve clients.

They came to accomplish the mission.

Nobody Wants To Hear It

Let's be honest.

Most people do not want to spend their workday hearing:

  • How terrible your boyfriend is.
  • How terrible your girlfriend is.
  • How terrible your husband is.
  • How terrible your wife is.
  • The details of your latest argument.
  • The latest chapter of ongoing personal drama.

People have their own responsibilities.

People have their own challenges.

People have their own lives.

They came to work.

There Is A Difference Between Being Human And Being Exhausting

Everyone has bad days.

Everyone experiences stress.

Everyone encounters challenges.

That's normal.

Being part of a team means showing each other grace and understanding.

But there is a difference between:

Having a tough day.

And:

Making everybody else participate in your tough day.

One is normal.

The other is exhausting.

I Once Heard A Preacher Say...

Years ago, I heard a preacher say something that always stuck with me:

"Stop complaining about your problems. 90% of people don't care and 10% are glad you have them."

I laughed when I heard it.

I still laugh today.

Whether the percentages are correct isn't really the point.

The point is that excessive complaining rarely solves anything.

Most people are focused on handling their own responsibilities.

That's life.

The Mission Comes First

When clients hire Two Marines Moving, they're paying us to:

  • Move their belongings.
  • Protect their property.
  • Communicate professionally.
  • Show up on time.
  • Work safely.
  • Execute the mission.

They are not paying us to spend the day discussing somebody's relationship problems.

Work requires focus.

Work requires teamwork.

Work requires energy.

Personal drama tends to consume all three.

Solve Problems

At Two Marines Moving, we pay people to solve problems.

Not create them.

Not spread them.

Not broadcast them.

We pay people to solve them.

That's one of the reasons I appreciate people who handle their responsibilities without making their problems everybody else's responsibility.

Final Thoughts

I am not a therapist.

I am not a psychiatrist.

I am not a psychoanalyst.

There are none on staff.

If you need a therapist, go hire a therapist.

That's what therapists are for.

At Two Marines Moving, we pay employees to work.

Employees do not pay us to listen to their problems.

So focus on the mission.

Handle your responsibilities.

Respect other people's time and attention.

And remember:

Your coworkers are teammates.

Not therapists.
